Walt Disney Hometown Main Street USA

Walt Disney Hometown Main Street USA

I was lucky enough to visit Marceline this past fall. I have always dreamed of visiting Walt's hometown & it WAS a dream come true! ;) Marceline is exactly two hours from Kansas City. If you ever visit the Walt Disney Hometown Museum they will give you a map to all of the local things to do in town. This is a TINY town reminded me of Mayberry. The only places to eat at were Sonic, a sandwich shop, & one other restaurant on the actual Main street. The diner that used to be on Main Street was sadly out of business.

We parked at the closest end so we could enjoy walking around. We probably took an hour to hour & half walking around Main Street. We first walked up to a few "antique stores" but it was a facade like you would see on Main Street at WDW or Disneyland?! I was VERY disappointed that they were not real working stores. A lot of the store fronts were like that sadly or had nothing in them at all. Here is a pic of the "antique store."

They actually had a lot of cute Disney collectibles that I wanted to buy!

We ate at the only ice cream shop in town besides Sonic & it was a great little shop. I will publish a separate review soon!

As we were walking by I wanted my picture with the iconic Main Street USA Mickey Mouse sign they have there. After my husband took my picture a lady working at the bank right next to it came outside & offered to take a picture of us both! That is one thing I can say about Marceline is that EVERYONE is so proud of Walt & loves telling their stories about him. I didn't sense that anyone was bitter or annoyed with the Disney presence in town or the tourists. Everyone was so helpful & amazing!

We learned on our Walt Disney Hometown Museum Tour that Walt was a young boy & witnessed  the Coca Cola sign being painted on the Zurcher's building! This was his inspiration for Coke Corner at Disneyland. As the years went by the building became apartments and were lost in a fire in 2002. The fire exposed the old Coca cola painted sign that the building had been missing for YEARS! In November 2015 Corporate Coca Cola company sent a painter to come out to Marceline to recreate the sign! They estimate the original was painted in 1906 the same year that Walt moved there! I love hearing stories like these!

There is an old theatre on Main Street but I will blog in detail about that on another day. ;)

One of the stores was a radio station with a guy talking live radio. He waved to us as we walked by. :)  We seemed to be the only tourists that day but everyone was so nice & warm to us! Back in DC you do NOT find that very often!

This was yet another empty store front

They have a train & caboose on Main Street as well. You can actually climb on the Caboose.

There was a hardware store, toy store, & a few consignment stores but that was about it besides the ice cream shop. I highly recommend a visit here if you can swing by!
