Disney's Art of Animation Spaghetti Carbonara recipe...

Pic courtesy of themeparks.about.com
I haven't tried a new recipe in awhile & was craving pasta so decided to try this one. By just looking at the ingredients I knew this one would be a keeper! This is incredibly easy to make. I made this from start to finish in 30 minutes. You can find spaghetti carbonara in the food court at WDW in the Art of Animation Resort. I hope to stay here one day!

This recipe is classic & simple but has a lot of flavor. My husband ate this so fast then immediately filled his bowl with more! Due to the eggs in it I'm not sure how this would reheat. The only tip I'd give is to leave your spaghetti in the hot water until you need it. The recipe says to put pasta mixed w/ egg back on stovetop BUT that will just make scrambled eggs! Just watch what you are doing & you will be fine.

Below are pictures of the step by step process.
Ingredients
  1. 1 pound spaghetti
  2. 1 lb bacon, chopped
  3. 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 2 eggs, room temperature, beaten
  6. 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  7. 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  8. Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
  1. In a large pot of salted, boiling water, add pasta and cook until al dente (or slightly under desired doneness).
  2. While the pasta is boiling, cook bacon in a separate skillet.
  3. Remove bacon to paper towels to drain, reserving 3 tablespoons of bacon fat.
  4. Return skillet to heat, cook onions until translucent, then add garlic, cooking only until aromatic, about 1 minute or less.
  5. Add to bacon mixture, set aside.
  6. Combine eggs, heavy cream, beat until mixed.
  7. Set aside.
  8. Drain and rinse pasta in warm water, return pasta to pot.
  9. Turn heat to medium-low.
  10. Drizzle in heavy cream and egg mixture and toss until coated, making sure that pasta is thoroughly warmed.
  11. Add reserved bacon fat, bacon, and onions.
  12. Fold in Parmesan cheese.
  13. Toss until incorporated and pasta is warm.
  14. Serve immediately.

Comparing MK Deluxe Hotels

In Early November 2014, I finally completed my "Tour de Magic Kingdom Deluxe Hotels."  I have now stayed at the Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary, Grand Floridian and Polynesian.  I also had the privilege of staying at Shades of Green (the former Disney Inn/Golf Resort http://waltdatedworld.bravepages.com/id120.htm), but that is not open to the public.

There happened to be a conference held at their location and I attended.  Otherwise, it's an Armed Forces Recreation Center.  I also stayed at the Disney Institute (now known as Saratoga Springs Resort) by Downtown Disney and the "Disney in Name Only" Dolphin located between Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

I swear these are bass and not dolphins:

I thought it would be a good time to compare, contrast and rank the four MK-area hotels.  Each has advantages and disadvantages.  All are spectacular. You cannot go wrong.

Wilderness Lodge
Advantages: The newest of the four.  Best theming.  Closest in terms of time to Epcot (via bus instead of monorail).
Disadvantages: The only one of the four not on the monorail line.  Difficult if not impossible fireworks viewing.

I first saw the Wilderness Lodge on an architectural tour conducted by the Disney Institute in 1996.  Peter Dominck was the designer and he would also design the Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Grand Californian at Disneyland.  I swore I would stay at the WL some day.  A mere nine years later, I did so in August 2005.  It was probably one of my favorite hotel stays anywhere at any time.

We were on a meal plan.  Roaring Fork was indispensable for counter service meals.  Whispering Canyon provided its own kind of entertainment.  I even like hanging around the lobby and listening to the themed music.  Even though it is not on the monorail line, its boat launch provides its own special service to and from the Magic Kingdom.

Contemporary
Advantages:  Shortest (and only practical) walk to MK.  Quickest access to Epcot via monorails.
Disadvantages: One of the two oldest properties.  Interior noise.

I managed to stay here during a conference in September 2006.  Oddly, there was a different conference at the Swan earlier in April 2006.  There was no comparison.  Although the wing of the Contemporary where I stayed was demolished soon after my stay to make way for the DVC's Bay Lake Tower, it was still better than what the much newer Swan had to offer.  As it is within walking distance of MK, I took advantage of a blank spot on the conference presentation schedule to take the early morning Steam Train Tour.

I even got to take the train off the main line and put it on the spur line back to the roundhouse (which is square) underneath the monorail storage bays.

That would not have been possible with any of the other locations. The coolness factor of having the monorail go through the building has to be offset by the fact that the monorails do make considerable noise when they are on the beam.

Grand Floridian
Advantages: Usually first priority with bus service.  Shortest ride to MK via monorail.  Closes access to Senses Spa.
Disadvantages: Cost.

The Grand Floridian was the land part of a land/sea combo package with the Disney Wonder in July 2007.  In retrospect, I wish I had done 3 land/4 sea nights instead of the 4/3 I did.  It's not because the GF isn't great.  It is great.  I just thought the sea portion of combination was cut too short.  I probably could have done a bonus day before the cruise, but I only got the GF because the sea portion of the package was at the concierge level.  Strangely, it did not include concierge level at the hotel; just on the ship.  Some believe the GF may be a little "too high end" because it doesn't have the same kind of theming as the other deluxe MK hotels.  It draws its theming from Victorian beach resorts such as the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.  I've walked around and through the "Hotel del" and there is more than a passing resemblance.

Still, pretty much everything here is top of the line.  If you're merely "resort hopping" to take a look around WDW's accommodations, this place should be on the list.

Polynesian
Advantages: Dole Pineapple Whip.  Shortest (and only practical) walk to the Transportation and Ticket Center with access to Epcot's monorail line. Walkable access to Senses Spa.
Disadvantages: One of the two oldest properties.

Another seven years would pass before I finally got to achieve the goal of staying at all four deluxe MK-area hotels.  In between, I was at Shades of Green in February 2010.  The Poly is only a short walk from SoG which would prove practical because the SoG bus service could be spotty at times.  I got to see the Poly before and during its recent reconstruction.  I was saddened by the loss of the lobby waterfall.

Still, the upgrade to Captain Cook's was overdue.  They even have dinner items which were most welcome after an exhausting day at Universal (see trip report).  I've been to Hawaii a number of times over the years.  The theming, even down to leis distributed at check-in, are, as always at Disney, immersive.  Somehow, it still felt warm enough even though morning temperatures dipped to the 40s. I think the ukulele and steel guitar music may have had something to do with that too.

Here are some superlatives.
Best Counter Service: Grand Floridian's Gasparilla Island Grill.  Their counter service food rivals some hotels' table service food.
Best Character Meal:  1900 Park Fare (this is kind of by default as it's the only character dinner service).
Best Table Service: Whispering Canyon.  More value and fun than the others.
Best Signature Table Service:  California Grill at the Contemporary.  Not just for the food; it's also for the view.
Best Rooms: Wilderness Lodge.
Best Music: Polynesian.

So, which is my favorite overall?  The Wilderness Lodge.  I would stay there again and again although I know there are other accommodations to try.

Where next?  After a lot of consideration, it is probably going to be the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  This is another Peter Dominick designed hotel.  That would complete a "Tour de Disney/Dominick" because I stayed at the Grand Californian in March 2008.  The GC is just as amazing at the WL.  I first stopped by AKL in 2006. AKL has an advantage over the Beach Club, Yacht Club, and Boardwalk deluxe resorts in that it has counter service breakfasts on site.  Its chief disadvantage is its relative isolation from the parks and other resorts.  I'll get over that while looking at the giraffes and zebras.

WDW Main Street Plaza Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich Review....

Amazingly enough this was my VERY first time ever in the ice cream parlor! I normally get my ice cream in Fantasyland. This is located at the end of Main Street on the right side. When you enter they have 2 lines on each side of the store. I did have to wait about 10 minutes or so but it gave me time to take pictures. :) The ice cream cookie sandwich has been on my to do list for awhile now so I'm glad I can check it off of the list! When I worked at WDW I had two neighbors who worked here & commented on how they gained muscles in their arms from scooping so much ice cream! ;)

There was a girl training who I assume was on the Disney College Program at the register. That is probably the line was so slow but I'll cut her some slack.;) This treat is HUGE! 2-4 people could share this. Be warned it is extremely messy to eat!!! I got it right before the parade &my friend had to run into Starbuck's to grab me more napkins because 2 was not enough & you need to eat it fast! This treat is built with 2 fresh homemade chocolate chip cookies! OH MY GODDDDDDDD! It was unbelieveable but I'm not sure I would get it again. It was way too melty & messy to eat. Next time I will try a much easier sundae to try. I only ate half of it if that because it was way too big for one person to eat.

There are a lot of tables outside to eat at but like I said I really wanted to see the new parade so ate over a trash can in front of Starbuck's area.

WDW Trash cans & Custodial "shows"...

Why wouldn't anyone take pictures of the trash cans at WDW?!I have two of the Trash emblems from Main Street & World Showcase in the basement at my Disney Bar :)

Did anyone have the pleasure of ever experiencing PUSH in TomorrowLand at WDW? If not here is an article I wrote on him in past so you know what I'm referring to: http://yohoyohobloggerslifeforme.blogspot.com/2012/10/push-is-back.html

Sadly they have retired PUSH but hopefully one day he will be back! :)

Disney does their trash cans so well. They are all so greatly themed with such thought & color. Think of that the next time you go to another theme park other than Disney. Who would think to theme the trash cans? Only Disney! I saw these YouTube videos the other day of what the custodial staff does at DL Tokyo & it is quite amazing! Why do they get all of the cool stuff?!!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsAB83QabnM - longer better version :)

Next time you are Disney admire where you are putting your trash ;)

WDW Port Orleans French Quarter Cinnamon Roll Review....

I am always on the lookout for a great cinnamon roll at Disney. On my last day in FL I decided to try this amazing treat. It had just enough cinnamon to icing. If you are a true cinnamon fan you will definitely enjoy this treat!

Big Hero 6 Review *SPOILERS*

Mickey Mouse Movie House- Big Hero 6  - By Marc Disney

Pic courtesy of disney.wikia.com

Look, at your local movie theater, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s not Superman. It’s Disney’s newest animated film, Big Hero 6. The film tells the story of Hiro who aspires to be like his older brother, Tadashi. When Tadashi is killed in a fire, Hiro assembles a group of his brother’s college friends to find his murderer. This group of unexpected and inexperienced superheroes has their jobs cut out for them as they discover that the culprit has stolen a top secret device that if not stopped, could mean the end of San Frantokyo and the world itself. Hiro must trust his team, his huggable robot sidekick, Baymax, and most importantly, his heart in order to set things right.

Since the acquisition of Marvel in 2009, the Walt Disney Company had be trying to develop a story from the Marvel lore that would be entertaining and inspiring without being self-referencing to its roots. I’m happy to say that Big Hero 6 accomplished this goal and exceeded my expectations. While I was initially skeptical about the combination of two very different genres of filmmaking, Big Hero 6 showed me how opposites not only attract but can work very well together. Anyone who is a fan of Marvel knows of their ability to create non-stop action sequences that will have audiences on the edge of their sits while all Disney fans know that the Walt Disney Company is known for creating moments that can touch your heart and cause you to reach for your tissue box. This film combines both elements of storytelling without one overshadowing the other but gentling blending to create an experience that will have you on the edge of your sit one moment and have you wanting to give Baymax a hug the next. In addition to its brilliant storytelling, the animation is amazing. Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams (Bolt and Wreck-It Ralph respectively), the film uses the same breath-taking animation while offering a gentle mix of both eye-popping special effects as well as soothing, soft colors to coincide with the scenes that are designed for (such as Baymax’s visit the dimension within the portal).  As with Wreck-It Ralph, this film is not a musical but the beautiful score is composed by Henry Jackman who previously worked on Wreck-It Ralph and features a new single by the group Fall Out Boy entitled “Immortal”. In conclusion, this magnificent combination of action and heart is not only a lesson in how opposites attract but how two completely different genres can come together to tell a single story with a single lesson- courage and sacrifice. From the Mickey Mouse Movie House, this film soars up, up and away with an A+ See you next time at the movies.
