Blue Sky - Star Wars Cantina by Jeff C.

Blue Sky - Star Wars Cantina

Written by Jeff C.

When I first heard that a Star Wars themed restaurant was coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios, I was like "Thank the maker!"

But, then the sad reality kicked in.  It was only temporary for Star Wars Weekends.  Housed in "an abandoned starship hangar" sounds like a cheap excuse for a lack of decor and an unfinished, non-immersive look.  In addition, the restaurant offers pretty standard fare with punny names covering for the absence of theming.  It reminded me of a Halloween episode of The Big Bang Theory in which Raj merely added monster names to dishes like "Draculoni and Cheese."  "Pilot Pomme Frites"?  Those are French Fries.  I do understand that few food items are mentioned in the films and corn dogs do resemble light sabers, but what a missed opportunity.

At least its existence gave me a new hope (see what I did there?) that a permanent restaurant would be built.  So, what would it be like?  An obvious choice would be to recreate the Mos Eisley Cantina under kinder, gentler management and less violence-prone clientele.  The local garrison of Stormtroopers had to respond to a disturbance during their shift.

The Tatooine Traders shop already presents a strong thematic element, so continuing it makes sense.  If Sonny Eclipse can pop up from time to time at Cosmic Ray's, I'm certain Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes  can do the same at the cantina.  Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Somewhere I read that Star Wars Weekends would also feature blue ice cream which looked as if it were made from the blue milk seen briefly in Episode IV and Episode II.  Apparently, it's produced by female Banthas.

The Rebel Hangar appears to have placed a great deal of emphasis on the alcoholic beverages, but not a simpler beverage like bottled water possibly from Owen Lars's moisture farm.  I'd buy it just for the container. I believe Aunt Beru was preparing some kind of vegetable stew in a combination food processor/slow cooker as noted in the clip below:

To me, the single biggest missed opportunity concerned the mysterious substance called Spice as in the Spice Mines of Kessel.  You could consume desserts of Glitterstim Spice Drops and Spice Cake.  Then again, Spice was reportedly highly addictive. While I can see why Disney struggled with a Stars Wars themed restaurant, it just seemed like a halfhearted effort.  I would have been happier scarfing down a Bantha Burger and a Chocolate Chip Wookiee.

The Best Thing I Ever Ate Ice Cream Edition at WDW

The Best Thing I Ever Ate Ice Cream Edition at WDW

One of my favorite things in life is ice cream. When I lived in Florida while interning at Disney I had the pleasure of trying a lot of different places over my semester to sample ice cream. I always HAVE TO have a sundae here every trip! No if ands or buts! I am talking about no other than Storybook Treats in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. I know most people love Dole Whips but this ice cream place has everything you would ever want or need.

This place used to be called Mrs. Pott's Cupboard in the 90s but was changed to Storybook Treats after the ToonTown demolition started. You can find Storybook treats to the right of the Pooh's Corner gift shop after you exit the Pooh ride.

The reason I love this place so much is that they have soft-serve ice cream. Anywhere else serves regular gallon ice cream in the parks. I prefer Soft-Serv personally. They have amazing sundaes to choose from so you really cannot go wrong. I was there last in September & the girl HOOKED me up with hot fudge!!!! Their hot fudge is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! I have never strayed from my chocolate ice cream with hot fudge sundae.

Tomorrowland Review *SPOILERS*

Tomorrowland Review *SPOILERS*

I knew I wanted to see this as soon as I saw the previews. The trailer drew me in for sure.Originally I didn't think this would be the kind of movie that I'd like but it was well worth going to see even for a non  science-fiction fan as myself.

Hint: If you go to see the movie at a Regal Cinema you get free pins if you are a Regal club card owner. We got 2 pins ourselves! While supplies last of course....

I loved that the opening was at the World's Fair! I was probably the only person in the theatre singing along with" Great,Big,Beautiful, Tomorrow". They played the original soundtrack from the World's Fair. You meet young Frank as he tries to sell off his "jet pack" to one of the judges of the fair. The judge is impressed at first but sends him away since it doesn't work. The judge's daughter sees something in Frank after her dad tells her NOT to recruit him. The girl tells him to go on the Small World attraction as she pins on the famous pin from the ads. Halfway through the ride the pin is detected & he goes down a secret passageway to a booth that will take him to Tomorrowland.

This movie was excellently cast. Casey is the main girl from the film. She has always loved the stars & space. She ends up in jail but has a pin in her items when she leaves. As soon as she touches the pin she "sees" Tomorrowland. She soon discovers that the only other people that know about the pin are robots!

The little girl from the World's Fair comes to help  Casey on her journey. I thought the best actor from this cast was Athena. She's going to be a big star soon! Athena & Frank were booted out of Tomorrowland 25 years ago. Athena thinks that Casey is their last hope to get Tomorrowland up & running. The main boss's robots are chasing them throughout most of the film. Casey & Athena get with Frank for one last shot at saving Tomorrowland. They get there by blasting off from a secret spaceship underneath the eiffel tower?! Say what?! Parts of this film definitely reminded me of a National Treasure kind of feel to the movie which I like.

There are tons of CGI & cool effects to this movie. If you want to see it I highly suggest you see it on the big screen. Parts of it are quite breathtaking.

I would say that this is a kid friendly movie. Some parts are scary but I think the kids can handle it. I don't want to spoil the ending of the movie but I say give it a shot!

What did you think of the movie???

Disney's Virgin Records Megastore...

Disney's Virgin Records Megastore...

If you have been traveling to WDW for a long time then you remember the Virgin Records Megastore that was in DownTown Disney. I remember this store fondly & was SO sad to see it change  over the years. I remember the first time I saw it had changed & it was an exhibit of Princess Diana items.

Cast Members got 10%-15% off in the store depending on the kind of items that you got. I had no access to a car to go to the mall so this place had SO many things that I love & miss. I travelled here many times to grab a magazine, CD, or a book. This was a MASSIVE store! It had a huge escalator leading up to the 2nd level. I didn't watch a lot of TV when I lived in Florida. I mainly listened to music, read magazines or books. I remembered there was a HUGE magazine & book section upstairs w/ tons of couches & lounge areas. I could literally be in that store for hours! Kids are so spoiled today w/ their iTunes. ;) Back in my day as a Disney intern we had to buy CD's kiddos. ;) I still have a lot of my CD's that I got here. My favorite one was the Cruel Intentions Soundtrack CD & the Bloodhound Gang The Bad Touch single CD . I did see that movie 2 or 3 times while living in Florida! : )  We used to be able see any movie  day or night for $4! It was a huge discount deal & we were well taken care of! I grew up watching "I Love Lucy" & always loved Ethel. I saw a biography of her life here & had to buy it! I still have that book to this day. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a Lucy fan.

Do you have any Virgin Megastore memories??

My Disney Souvenirs & Gifts...

I don't know about you but I for one love to see what people buy for gifts when they are at the parks! I went on a girl's trip last September so had to buy gifts for my husband, mom, two nieces, & nephew. I don't HAVE TO buy my nieces & nephew gifts but I would feel bad going there w/o getting them anything! They haven't gotten to go yet. I went the week after Labor Day. My oldest niece was cute & whispered to me she won't tell anyone if she got to go with me. Hopefully one day I'll get to go with them!

My mom does a lot of stuff for me so I wanted to get her a nice gift. I ended up getting her one of the Vera Bradley small purses. She still uses it everyday & says wherever she goes she gets a ton of compliments ESPECIALLY after people realize Mickey Mouse is on it. ;)

If you know my husband you know at least this one tidbit about him.......He LOVES Indiana Jones! It was our entrance music into our Wedding Reception too. He wore his Indy hat into the reception of course. ;) His favorite ride is that attraction at DL & he is super psyched to go this fall. His favorite ride at WDW is Mount Everest so I had to get him a shirt there too. He loved both of his shirts. :) He ALWAYS wants to pull on the rope next to the IJ Stunt show at DHS. :)If you don't know about that rope just ask. ;)

Us on Hween a few years ago. He was Indy & I was his geisha ;)

I did end up buying myself only one thing. I'm not a huge Belle fan but I was drawn to this shirt. I'm not THAT big of a girl but this XL shirt barely fits me so be forewarned that WDW sizes run SMALL!!!

My husband's friend messaged me on FB while I was at WDW to find the dual doll of Elsa & Anna. I did find it for her. Her daughter LOVES her doll. :)

My nephew was the hardest to buy for since he only liked Frozen at the time. He loved the fans & his shirt. All he talked about at that time was Olaf so it was a no brainer. ;)

My youngest niece is a HUGEEEEEEEEEEEE Elsa fan to put it lightly! The one thing I know she wanted was the Elsa crown. The only place I could find it at was the Norway store in Epcot. My nieces share it. :)  She also loves her Frozen Sweatshirt. :)

My oldest niece asked for something Merida but said if I couldn't find anything of her the back-up was something Ariel. The only Merida items I saw was a $$$$$$ dress and archery set. Disney needs to make some more Brave toys!

I found her this diary that included a seashell necklace plus a matching bag. I only saw this item at Magic Kingdom in the Big Top Souvenirs shop. I love that store! It is my favorite gift shop in the Magic Kingdom.

What are your favorite gift and souvenirs????

Gourmet Mickey Cookbook Volume II If you are the kind of person who throws a lot of parties & likes older recipes that Disney offers this is the Cookbook for you. This book has a GREAT list of alcohol drinks as well as unique appetizers, seafood, desserts, & more! There are a lot of recipes in here for places that no longer exist as well. This is one of the older books & has a TON of recipes compared to the newer books that don't have nearly as many recipes.

SAMPLE Recipe:

Margarita from San Angel Inn

1 serving

Lemon Ice
Kosher Salt
Crushed Ice
7 oz. Water
1  1/4 lemon bar mix
2 1/4 oz. tequila
1 1/2 oz. clear orange liqueur
Lime Slice

Dip rim in 16oz. margarita glass in lemon juice, then in kosher salt. Fill with ice & set aside.
In a blender, combine water & lemon bar mix. Add tequila and clear orange liqueur & blend until foamy. Pour over crushed ice.

Garnish w/ Slice of a lime. Tip: For Frozen drink, add ice with other marg ingredients & blend until thick.

I've had Cooking with Mickey and the Disney Chefs  the longest I think out of all of my books. This was a great book for a beginner just getting into making more complex recipes. Everything is easily labeled in the table of contents in the front of the book. The recipes are divided by Park,Resorts, & Cruise Line. It can be intimidating trying recipes that aren't as easy as 1,2,3. The directions are VERY easy to follow. You just need to take your time & read the recipe in full before you try to make.

Mango Sorbet from Cinderella's Royal Table

Makes 4-6 Servings

I have made this before & it is SO refreshing! Step by step pictures are on my blog:http://yohoyohobloggerslifeforme.blogspot.com/2014/06/disneys-mango-sorbet-recipe.html

4 Large ripe Mangoes,peeled,seeded, & Chopped
1/2 c Water
2 T Light Corn Syrup
2 T Sugar

1) Puree mango in a blender; You should get around 3 cups
2) In a bowl, stir together the mango, water, light corn syrup, & sugar until the mixture is smooth & the sugar has dissolved
3)Chill the mixture, covered, about 2 hours until cold ( I made mine in an ice cream maker for 30 minutes)
4)Store tightly packed & covered in freezer department or fridge until ready to serve.

I would say that the Delicious Disney Cookbook is more for the advanced cook. The recipes in this book tend to be more time consuming & complex. I would not recommend for a beginner. If you have a chef in your family who loves Disney this would be a great gift!

Delicious Disney Desserts is also a very complex cookbook. If you have an advanced baker or pastry chef who loves Disney this would be an ideal gift. The recipes in here tend to be from the Signature restaurants.

Cooking with Mickey around the world  is by far my favorite cookbook that I own. I use it ALL the time! It is very similar to the first cookbook that I listed. This cookbook also has everything from unique drinks, appetizers,&new dinner ideas for you & your family.

Fort Wilderness Campground Baked Beans

6 Servings

1 small onion, finely chopped
1/3 c molasses
1/2 c brown sugar
1 c tomato catsup
2 cans (1 lb. 5 oz. each) New England style baked beans

Combine onion, molasses, brown sugar & catsup;mix well
Add beans & stir gently to blend. Spoon into buttered 2-quart casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until bubbly.

I haven't gotten a chance to make anything from this cookbook yet. I have a huge running list of recipes inside it than I'd like to try though! If you are an adventurous eater I would say this book is for you. Every Disney cookbook normally has the basic categories of: Appetizers, Soup/Salad,Veggies,Meat/Poultry,Seafood,Desserts. This book does not contain drink recipes. If you've always wanted to try the Kitchen Sink recipe then this book is for you!

My last Cookbook from my collection is Chef Mickey Treasures from the Vault & Delicious New Favorites
It has quite the title doesn't it? HAHA I have used this book more & more in the past year. There are a couple of Walt Disney's personal recipes in this book. There are drinks included in this book as well as the normal categories. I have made the Asparagus soup from this book & it was EXCELLENT! There is a mix in this book between easy & hard recipes. I guess you can say that about all of them. It just depends what you are looking for.

Please feel free to contact me & ask me any questions about any of these Cookbooks. I love to help & share the Disney Magic!
